  • The pharmaceutical and healthcare sector recorded 95 M&A transactions worth $5.1bn in September 2008, witnessing a decline of 25.2% and 79.1% in volume and value terms, respectively, as compared to the six-month (Mar 2008–Aug 2008) average. M&A activity in the biotechnology sector was aimed at strengthening late stage development product pipeline to replenish deleting product portfolios.
  • M&A activity in the healthcare services segment was driven by home healthcare service providers and assisted living facility operators. The pharmaceutical sector witnessed cross-border transactions focused primarily on the US and emerging markets. Deal activity in the medical devices segment was driven by investments in cardiovascular and spine market.
  • Venture capitalists invested over $756.3m in 87 companies, a decrease of 19.8% in value terms as compared to the last six-month average, driven by investments in biotechnology sectors.
  • The sector recorded five public offerings, a decrease of 52.4% as compared to the six-month average. Private placement deals decreased by 57.1% and 10.1% in volume and value terms, respectively, as compared with the last six-month average.
