Pipeline and Commercial Insight: Influenza Vaccines – Pandemic threat revitalizes the sector
The influenza vaccine market, sized at approximately $2.2 billion in 2006, yields many challenges. Demand is highly variable, and only large players are able to cope with the need for annual updates and the costly manufacturing process. However, driven by the increasing pandemic threat, the market is growing fast and is predicted to more than double in size by 2016.
Key unmet needs in influenza vaccines include pandemic vaccines, faster and more flexible production methods, better efficacy in the elderly and needle-free administration. In the seasonal influenza vaccine pipeline, Novartis’ Optaflu will be the first cell-culture based product to be launched, whereas GSK has a promising adjuvanted candidate in phase III. Pandemic research is mainly driven by government funding with three compounds by Sanofi, GSK and Novartis currently awaiting approval in the US or EU. However, due to the lack of a clear target, the real benefit of these candidates is uncertain.
