| April
2, 2007--For the
first time in years, consumers will see new television
advertisements for Pfizer’s pain medication Celebrex.
Pfizer pulled all Celebrex advertising in December 2004
after a study found an increased risk of heart attack and
stroke related to the pill.
Critics have alleged that
Celebrex was the subject of lax drug-safety regulation.
Celebrex’s rival, Vioxx, was withdrawn from the market
for safety reasons. Critics have also said Celebrex was
over-promoted to consumers who could have taken cheaper
alternatives that would have had the same effect.
The new ads will address
Celebrex’s side effects and argue that it’s still a
good option for some patients. Even without
advertisements, Celebrex’s sales increased 24% to $2
billion in 2006. Forbes.com
