Angel Investment Up 10.8% in 2006, Rivaling Venture Capital Levels

March 20, 2007--Angel investment in US entrepreneurial ventures in 2006 totaled about $25.6 billion, a 10.8% increase over 2005, according to a report by the University of New Hampshire’s (UNH) Center for Venture Research. That makes last year's angel investments roughly equivalent to the $25.5 billion invested by venture capitalists in 2006 (as reported by the MoneyTree survey in January). Unlike venture capitalists, angel investors use their own money.

UNH's venture research center said last year's increase marked a post-2000 high for angel investment. The average deal size for angel investments climbed 7.5% to about $500,000. That compares with between $7 million and $8 million for the average venture capital investment.

Healthcare companies accounted for 21% of angel deals last year, followed by software and biotechnology with 18% each, and retail with 8%. The Boston Globe
