20, 2007--Angel
investment in US entrepreneurial ventures in 2006 totaled
about $25.6 billion, a 10.8% increase over 2005, according
to a report by the University of New Hampshire’s (UNH)
Center for Venture Research. That makes last year's angel
investments roughly equivalent to the $25.5 billion
invested by venture capitalists in 2006 (as reported by
the MoneyTree survey in January). Unlike venture
capitalists, angel investors use their own money.
UNH's
venture research center said last year's increase marked a
post-2000 high for angel investment. The average deal size
for angel investments climbed 7.5% to about $500,000. That
compares with between $7 million and $8 million for the
average venture capital investment.
Healthcare
companies accounted for 21% of angel deals last year,
followed by software and biotechnology with 18% each, and
retail with 8%. The
